Unless you’ve taken residence under a rock somewhere off the
coast of a deserted island, you’ve at least SEEN the ‘Ugly Shoe’ Trend. That’s
right, I’m taking Birkenstocks, Sliders and Tevas. They’re everywhere. From the
runway to the streets to fashion bloggers and even the nearest H&M.
Everywhere.
Now, if you were to have asked my opinion about Birkenstocks
this time last year, I might have fake gagged. Sliders? I’d think of those
nasty guys freshmen year wearing their Nike sliders with socks, and then
probably fake gagged again. Tevas? Oh dear. First, I would think back to the
time when I actually owned a pair. Of course, I was about seven, on vacation in
Mexico and didn’t know better. From there, I would think about my dad wearing
them with socks. I would then proceed to actually gag.
They’re ugly shoes, there’s no way around it.
I suppose they’ve always been around. Birkenstocks go back
to 1902.
They first surfaced in fashion after the Celine Spring
Summer 13 show. My first thoughts were “Really Celine? Are you kidding me? Are.
* clap * You. * clap * Kidding.
* clap * Me. * clap * “

But it wasn’t until
this past season that they really took off.

And suddenly, I
really want a pair. I hate them and I think they’re ridiculously hideous, but I
really want a pair.

That got me thinking
about fads and trends in general.
Do I only like the
Birkenstocks because they’re in trend?
Well, yes.
But there’s more to
it.
Fashion is all about
seeing things differently.
At first, I didn't think I would be caught dead even thinking about owning a pair.
It's about making things your own and taking inspiration from everywhere.
That’s the best part
about fashion nowadays. Nothing is on trend because everything is on trend.
